Are You Moving From A Longboard To Something Shorter? Whats Your Next Move?

So you've been putting your time in, in the water.  You have taken some beatings, got back up and arrived at a point in your surfing where you're ready to start working on your turns but not ready to make the jump to a high performance shortboard.  With so many options and so many opinions on what to ride, we look at a few things to consider before you buy that board.

But what do you switch to?

What we recommend  is you switch to a Funboard before buying a fish or shortboard.  Two boards that have been working fantastic in this area are the Huevos Rancheros and The Froth Pit.

What is a Funboard? A Fun board is exactly what it says on the can! It’s a board designed for maximum fun! You can surf it in all conditions, it’s stable to help you progress quickly and maximize wave count but it has the added benefit of having these high performance elements that create a board that demands as much fun is made of it no matter what level surfer you are.

We focus on the Huevos Rancheros and the Froth  Pit for options depending on what style of surfer you plan on being and look at the benefits of each board.

The Huevos Rancheros

This magic carpet egg shape provides the smoothest most stylish ride you'll probably ever experience.

The bottom counters and rocker create a fast and nimble surfboard that encourages smooth cutbacks and huge wave range.  It paddles like a mini longboard  but the tail round tail lets you turn it tight giving you the feeling of a shortboard, just more stable.

The Huevos let’s you charge anything from knee high to overhead waves with stability and style.  Really fast speed down the line, Great foam climbs and floaters and quick rail to rail—this board is perhaps the most fun to ride. ( Our experienced surfers love this board in smaller sizes, it really is the ultimate fun board)

How do I size my Huevos as a transition board down from a Longboard?

The Huevos Rancheros, is Perfect for those of you out there who are looking for a smooth transition down from a longboard that keeps maximum paddle power and encourages you to start making smooth cutbacks and experimenting with Fins.   We cannot recommend this board enough!

Size it up to 2 foot smaller than your current longboard depending on your skill level and fitness. ( Be sure to call us or live chat to get the best dimensions for your ability)

The Froth Pit

Our first breakthrough hybrid transition board. Initially designed as a small wave mush monster for surfers already riding smaller boards, this board suddenly was being ridden in larger sizes ( yet still way! smaller than ever expected) by people transitioning down from a longboard and seeking that shortboard look and feel.

Its a small, Fat shortboard.  No gimmicks here, wide and short for stability and nimbleness, fat forgiving rails, a more hybrid shortboard outline with slight hip and squash tail.

The bottom counters and are that of nimble shortboard but with a more relaxed all-round rocker this creates a more shortboard feeling through maneuvers.

It still paddles great but can be ridden very small depending on weight and fitness levels.  The Froth Pit let’s you charge anything from knee high to Head High waves with a more lively, quicker, closer to a shortboard feel than the Huevos.

How do I size my Froth as a transition board down from a Longboard?

The Froth Pit, is Perfect for those of you out there who are looking for a faster route to riding a shortboard.  We advise you to consider this board if you are getting to the beach 3 times a week or more and are of an above average fitness level.  While this board paddles amazing it will feel small at first and require some more paddle power.

Size it up to 2 foot smaller than your current longboard depending on your skill level and fitness. ( Be sure to call us or live chat to get the best dimensions for your ability)
